A book by Tom Sinclair
The AI Decade
50 Predictions About War, Work, Power and Life in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The new book
What do we choose
to hand over?
Our work. Our children’s education. The information we trust. The decisions we allow machines to make.
The AI Decade examines how artificial intelligence could change everyday life and the balance of power—from the classroom and the newsroom to the battlefield.
At its heart are fifty predictions, each with a date and a probability. These are forecasts readers can revisit, challenge and judge, rather than promises that stay safely out of reach.

Author’s Note
An extract from The AI Decade by Tom Sinclair.
I am not a scientist. I have never trained a model, written a line of machine-learning code, or arrived at a settled view on whether a computer can be conscious. What I have done, for about twenty years, is edit — newspapers and magazines, other people’s work and my own, under deadlines that did not care how interesting the subject was.
Editing is a particular habit of mind. It means asking where a claim came from and whether the evidence holds; whether a striking sentence is striking because it is true or only because it is striking. It means setting accounts that disagree side by side, noticing the figure that has quietly detached itself from its source, making difficult things clear to people who have no time to become experts, and deciding, over and over, what deserves to survive to the next draft. That is the only expertise I bring to a subject on which I have no other authority.
I wrote this book because I have watched, at close range, a tool become part of how a great deal of knowledge work now gets done — and because most of what is said about it is either too frightened or too dazzled to be much use.

How AI was used in making the book
Generative AI was used for research, drafting, analysis and editing. Tom selected the evidence, determined the arguments and predictions, checked and edited the final text, and accepts responsibility for its contents. The book includes a fuller account in the Author’s Note.
An experiment: asking AI to review a book about AI
Five AI models were asked to review the manuscript in fresh sessions. Their responses were an experiment, not independent human reviews or a critical consensus.
